Acid Black Cherry

PROFILE
The solo project of Janne Da Arc vocalist yasu, Acid Black Cherry is a new rock unit currently signed to Avex. With only one release so far under their belt, the group has already managed to cause a lot of excitement both at home in Japan and abroad.

BIOGRAPHY
Though Janne Da Arc fans had initially been disappointed in January of 2007 as they learned that the band would be taking a break and the members would be working on solo careers, a rush of excitement was felt in May as Janne Da Arc vocalist yasu started to work on his solo project. An official announcement had not been made, but that didn't stop yasu from performing in secret, and throughout the month May and in the beginning of June, he held various secret lives all across the country. In June, the official announcement of the start of Acid Black Cherry appeared on the official site of Janne Da Arc. This was not the only announcement, however; the groups first single, SPELL MAGIC, would be released in July. The highly anticipated single was received very well, and for the recording yasu had been working together with various other well-known artists, such as SUGIZO (S.K.I.N., ex Luna Sea) and SHUSE (ex La’Cryma Christi). Live, he was supported by Chisato (PENICILLIN), YUKI (DUSTAR-3), and various other musicians. Acid Black Cherry's popularity increased rapidly, and yasu appeared in various magazines and in a lot of radio shows, sometimes even doing radio appearances twice in a single day. A second single has been scheduled for release in September and we are curious to see what Acid Black Cherry will bring us in the future!

Chihiro Onitsuka

PROFILE
Chihiro Onitsuka is a successful songwriter and musician whose carefully honed talents and unique style have caused a sensation in Japan. Accompanied by her piano playing or occasional guitar, she is a rare artist in the mass produced market of Japanese pop idols. Her voice is recognisable for its large range both in scale and emotion, which some critics may unfairly describe as raw but her fans adore as soulful and heartfelt. Even though Chihiro started recording at an early age her work is of high quality, encompassing folk styles blended with rock. Relaxing, invigorating and most of all hopeful, Chihiro's music is something truly unique that comes entirely from her heart and reaches through her music to touch the hearts of the listener too.

BIOGRAPHY

As a child, Chihiro was very much encouraged by her parents to listen to and enjoy music, seeing as her mother was especially fond of US folk pop bands like The Carpenters. In school Chihiro wrote poetry which she wrote prodigiously before she was inspired to write music. Her inspiration to write songs as well as performing them grew from her admiration of US musician Jewel. During her senior high school years Chihiro continued to write and received a great boost to both her confidence and musical legitimacy by winning the Grand Prize of the prestigious Virgin Tokyo Artists Audition. Soon after in 1999, the then 17 year old moved to Tokyo to begin her music career. Spring of 2000 saw the release of her first single, Shine, which was soon followed by arguably her most famous song, Gekkou, used as the introduction theme to a popular TV show "Trick". Two more successful singles followed which showcased Chihiro's wide range of styles and even wider range of singing voice which, although unpolished and clear, was sincere and suited her music perfectly. The music industry and the public were amazed at her combination of young age and advanced musical talent which were a total contrast to the usual carbon copy female J-pop idols that dominated the charts. Chihiro was a complete artist who relied on her vocal skills, piano and heartfelt performances to entertain the crowds, which she did during the summer of 2001 in support of the release of her debut album, Insomnia. The album topped the Oricon charts in its first week of release and two songs, Innocence and Cage, received international attention from the US. Innocence was used in a television commercial whilst Cage received a full single release. Meanwhile, in Japan Chihiro released her first DVD, Cradle on my Noise and was honoured with a Japan Record Award for the lyrics to her song Memai. The beginning of 2002 was rather quiet until the release of her second full album, This Armour, which was followed soon by Chihiro being presented with a Golden Disc Award for her first album. The summer was filled with a long tour entitled Live Vibe, which was received with great enthusiasm by her ever growing fan base. However, it seems as even though with a busy tour schedule there was time to write as at the end of the year Chihiro's third album, Sugar High, was released. The following year brought a quartet of singles which were released from August through November and an album follow-up containing the single versions and new songs was highly anticipated. However, instead the record label issued a box set of singles which seemed to be designed as a marketing ploy to get fans to buy all her singles again without the expected extra material that an album would contain. This decision by the record label was a fatal mistake as Chihiro was so opposed to the idea that she broke ties with the company and moved to the Universal label. Universal still continue to release her old material as they still own the rights.Chihiro's style took a major change during this time and her first release on her new record label was a surprise for her fans. She debuted her new style by performing the song Sodatsu Zassou during a live concert. It is interesting that to mirror her new heavier rock style that she also performed a cover of a song by the US Grunge Rock band Nirvana. The single Sodatsu Zassou was released the following month in October along with the shock announcement statement from Chihiro, that she would be taking a break from music for an undisclosed period of time for medical reasons.

Zwei

PROFILE
Zwei simply means "two" in German and of course, the band consists of two members. Female band-members still seem to be pretty rare in Japanese rock bands but Zwei is an exception on the rule because both members are female. They are produced by British producer Nick Wood, and you can really hear the European influence. Their music is described as a mix between Japanese pop and UK rock.

BIOGRAPHY
Zwei officially started in June 2003, but the two members actually met in spring 2002. Megu (bass) and Ayumu (vocals) met each other at a live show, and Megu (ex. Pineal) asked Ayumu (ex. Cherry Feel) to become the vocalist of the band she wanted to create. Only a year later in June 2003 it became official when they were signed to the record label VAP.However, it took quite a while before their first release. In May 2004 they released their first maxi-single, called "Movie star". A few months later, in July, they released their second maxi-single, "Watashigai no Uta". And it didn't take long before their first album was released either."Pretty queen" was released on October 14. Containing eleven songs, it was an impressive first album for the band, featuring versatile styles from upbeat pop/rock songs to slow ballads. After a brief period of silence, the band released their third single, called "Hikari" on March 23, 2005. Commemorating the release, the band set off on the "Zwei Live Tour 2005 ~Feel The Light~" tour in April, playing in live houses throughout Japan. In July they kept the release pace with their next single, "Dragon", followed by the single "FAKE FACE" in November, and ended the year with their second full album on December 21 titled "Z (Zeta)".In the New Year, they released their first DVD in February titled "Zwei in the Box". The DVD contained two discs, one containing five PVs, the other containing bonus live footage that included TV spots. In the spring, the two began shooting the PV for the song "Denny" from their new album. The PV was quite controversial with imagery of graphic bondage between the two women that the PV has two versions; one that is shortened and severely edited, and the uncensored version that was obtainable only on their official website.Later that fall, an announcement was made on September 2, 2006 that the band had been switched from VAP onto Universal Music Japan. After another period of silence, the band is getting promoting their first new single in almost two years titled "1+1=2 (Ichi Tasu Ichi wa Ni)" which is due for it's highly anticipated release on June 20, 2007. On April 15, they participated in the live event titled "SHOCK TREATMENT" at Omotesandou FAB with other bands such as GLAMOROUS HONEY.June 16 they will be appearing at a second live event, "TRIANGLE FISCHER 003" with S.Q.F. and The Seventh Sense at Ebisu LIVE GATE TOKYO.

PROFILE
Viored creates music which is characterized by the harmony between the twin guitars and the energy of the whole band. Viored composes not only heavy songs but also pop-rock songs and ballads. Some of their songs would attract people who like the GazettE. However, other songs are unique and show how Viored is a promising young band.

BIOGRAPHY
After Shulla disbanded, the guitarists Nagi and Yuichi, who played drums in Shulla, decided to create an attractive band with a nice appearance. As they went along, their ambitions guided them and they picked up more members: Kei (ex.Marusa), Seiya (ex.A) and Kou (ex.Henzel). Viored officially started on November 8th at Meguro Rock Maykan having a oneman with the title the Birth of Chaos. The day after, their first mini-album Chaos was released in two versions. For four months they introduced themselves in several events alongside more well-known bands such as KuRt or Phantasmagoria and did a two-man live with SCREW. They were a feature on the promotion tour of the CANNONBALL vol.3 omnibus, available since February 2007. At the end of March, they attended the stylish wave CIRCUIT'07 before touring across Japan. On May 16th, they released the maxi-single kusabi, which helped attract many fans. Viored then focused on lives for a few months, playing with many bands. In October, they organized a tour called Light wraps viored scene and chose UnsraW, Irokui and CELLT among others as guests. That same month, they had their oneman while their two singles [Created perfect new vision]-Taste of Heartless- and [Created perfect new vision]-Far memory of Alice- were released on the 10th. Finally, their first year of activities will end with the famous event stylish wave COUNT DOWN '07-'08 on December 31st.

PROFILE
Vidoll is a visual kei band that saw its start in February 2002 under the Matina label. Despite several line-up changes, the band has continued to move forward with an ever-growing popularity and a fan base to match. Their music, almost a genre in itself, is a blending of heavy rock, sweetly sung ballads, and jazzy upbeat numbers. One of the most successful bands ever signed to Under Code, their "graduation" from the indies label is merely another stepping stone to propel them on to an even bigger and brighter career.

BIOGRAPHY
Rame (ex. Radifia, ex. Eze:Qul) started Vidoll in 2002 with Jui (ex. Luinspear) on vocals, Yukine and Ayano on guitar, and Tero on drums. They performed for the first time in May 2002 at the Yokohama Arena Soundhall as part of a multi-band event. Shortly afterwards in July, they released their first two maxi-singles, face↑pisaroto and face↓mayura, both of which quickly sold out. The following months saw the band featured on several Matina label compilation CDs, as well as the release of more singles.Kisaki, the previous owner of Matina, founded a label called Under Code Productions. Vidoll was one of the bands that moved with him to the new label. In March 2003, their first releases on the new label hit stores with another slew of singles and a mini-album to follow. At the end of May they released their first DVD. It contained three PVs and one live performance, and then on June 26th, they held their first one-man concert at Meguro Rock May Kan. August marked Ayano's exit from the band, citing musical differences, and in December a live recording of their first one-man show was released. Hide, formerly of the band Vanilla, took Ayano's place. Taking its first steps toward an international career, Vidoll released a best-of album on the French label Mabell, introducing themselves to a European audience. Their first album, Mukashi futokoro KASHI Ningyou shuu + omake, a re-release of two earlier mini-albums with bonus material, was released on June 8, 2005. It was limited to 10,000 copies and completely sold out.Jui announced during a live on April 26, 2005, that Hide and Yukine would be leaving the band at the end of June, following one last fan club only tour [Toumeihanzai]. Shun and Giru joined as the two new guitarists of Vidoll. In 2006 Kisaki announced that Vidoll, along with two other Under Code< bands, would be leaving to join another label. No other information was known as Vidoll prepared for their next album, V.I.D ~Very Important Doll~, released on November 22nd.Although their "graduation" from Under Code Productions has passed with a performance on February 14, 2007, the band is still going strong. A best-of double album titled Proposal ~Sotsugyou Kokuhaku~ went on sale on the 28th along with a PV collection DVD, Flashback, and V.I.D seat for Lastlovers, a live DVD containing footage of their December 29, 2006 show.Their new official site just went live as of March 2007 and they are now a part of Sword Records. Whatever the future holds for them, Vidoll's success is sure to continue expanding, a dominate force in the visual kei scene.
